Pensteel Sales Rep turned Racing Driver (Almost)

Throughout 2020, throughout all of the lockdowns, people losing jobs, people losing friends and family, and all of the unknowns it was inevitable that people’s mental health would suffer. Unfortunately for some people, all of these adversities became too much. With mental health at an all-time low and suicide rates rising, not only in the UK, but across the globe, people have started to band together with some incredible efforts in order to raise money for the NHS and also Mental Health Charities.

Matt, our resident Sales Engineer here at Pensteel decided he wanted to do something to raise some money and awareness for mental health. Being a long time motorsport and sim-racing enthusiast he entered an online charity race, titled “The Jimmy Broadbent Race for Mental Health”. The race was set up to allow teams of up to 5 drivers to compete over 23 hours within the racing simulator iRacing, at Circuit Zolder, with each team paying an entry fee, and the race broadcast live on Youtube to allow people to donate throughout the event.

Matt decided to take on this event on his own, racing for 23 hours straight, having struggled with mental health before. After we heard of his plans, we decided to donate some money towards the event, and to also sponsor Matt per hour that he raced, which earned us a logo space on his car.

After 23 gruelling hours and several hundred laps, Matt managed to complete the race, finishing in the top 10 in his class, having battled with the likes of Jimmy Broadbent (Sim Racing extraordinaire), Tony Kanaan (IndyCar Racing Driver), and Matt Gallagher (Sky Sport F1 Presenter). The event overall managed to raise an incredible £71,000 for the Mind Charity, and incredible achievement for everyone who took part, organised and donated towards the event. Of course, we are a little biased as to which car looked the best on track!
